Heading North Through Maine - 2017

July 23 - Saturday

Rode bikes around the campground. Another area has fewer campsites, without hookups.

Drove to Bridgeton to get band aids for Bobbi's arm, which she ripped open on the back door latch. We also bought mouse traps.

We ate a delicious lobster roll, from Lobster Express, in Shorey Park, by a lake. We watched an afternoon storm roll towards us across the lake. We went food shopping at Hannifords. The storm broke while we were shopping. The noise of the rain on the roof was very loud in the store. It was only drizzling when we left.

It rained on-and-off all night long. We set the mouse trap, but no sign of the mouse.

July 24 - Sunday

Stopped at Bates for Tim's stroll down memory lane. Took pictures of quad gate, Hathorn Hall, Coram Library and the Chapel.

New dorms have been built by Mt. David. Walked up Mt. David. The path we used to take down the hill in winter on dining commons trays is still there.

The old store is still on the corner, but the owner's English is not great. The store was closed.

The old armory is gone.

Walked by all of Tim's old dorms, Adams, Smith North, Smith South

Finished the circuit of the campus, getting a nice view across Lake Andrews and over to the sports complex.

So long for now, Academia Batesina.

Drove to Castine and Manor Inn to see Nancy and Tom. We talked in the bar, then header to the van to spend the night in the parking lot.

July 25 - Monday

Ate breakfast at the Inn. Good blueberry pancakes. Students from Lithuania work there.

Hiked the area behind the house to old battery sites. Tim rode his bike around the area later, while Bobbi did yoga in Nancy's yoga studio.

In the afternoon, we went out in Tom's classic wooden boat. We were treated to lobster rolls and cheese. We watched a reverse waterfall form, as the tide went out. From the boat, we could see lots of sea birds.

July 26 - Tuesday

Nancy and Tom invited us to return after Canada. Bobbi helped Tom with his ankle. All the help watched.

Drove through Blue Hill on the way to Acadia. Ate lobster and crab roll at Lunt's Gateway Lobster Pound, along with Casper Weinberger, Reagan, Bush, Gingrich.

Arrived at Seawall campground, near a natural sea wall. Hiked to the Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse,  that is on the Acadia National Park quarter.

We then drove to a different trail head and walked by Ship Harbor Bay.

The campsites at Seawall are very close. It seems like the original campsites were all split in two. Bobbi spoke with the girls camped next to use about yoga. There tent was about ten feet from our back door, with no intervening trees.

 Jul 27 - Wednesday

Checked out at 10 am. We drove to the natural seawall and ate breakfast on the rocks.

Drove along US 1, along the rocky coast of Maine. Very pretty. Stopped in Machias for LP gas. We found a gas station that had tanks, but they were new and hadn't been certified yet. They directed us to the local hardware store. Asked the locals for the best place to get a lobster roll and they suggested Riverside Takeout. The place is an old mobile home with outside picnic tables. The lobster rolls were delicious.

We stopped at the information center and found out about a festival on Campobello.

We arrived at Cobscook in the late afternoon. We took a 3.5 mile walk in the campground, looking for prime spots with good wifi. We moved to a new site that is bigger, flatter and has wifi and phone reception. Barbarita had trouble with the TV. We resolved the issue over the phone. We booked one more night at the campground.
