Mike E was up and out early, we caught a glimpse of him driving down the road. Karen and Chloe packed up. We all left at the same time. Took "Listening Woman" by Tony Hellerman from the house library.
We had reservations at the Franconia State Park. We had reservations at 5, but had to backtrack to a different park in order to dump. The girl at the information window knew nothing about dumping. She directed us to the public restrooms. A lifeguard had to teach her what to do. Back at our park, we camped in site 38.
July 19 - Tuesday
We moved to site 72 in the morning. It is larger, level and the other campsites are further away.
Bobbi had just taken the trash to the dumpster. After being back for a few minutes, a bear walked through out campsite, sniffing around the back door of the camper. The bear wandered off as Tim was thinking about (but not moving to get) the camera. Several minutes later the bear came jogging back with two kids and mom and pop chasing the bear. We did not hear about any bear maulings that day, luckily.
After that, we headed to town. We went to a used book store, Chat Room Books, that advertised wifi. We expected a little cafe, but it was just a store, crammed with used books. The cafe had a few old pieces of furniture that did not look inviting. We bought some Hillerman books, but did not stay for tea. We passed on Mexican and a bar with seating on a deck. We opted for dinner in the van, in the parking lot.
On the way back to the camp site, we went to the Old Man in the Mountain overlook, to see where the old man used to be. It is sad that it fell off. Some locals were complaining that they knew this would happen when they put in I-93 by the base of the mountain. The vibration from the heavy traffic was too much.
We picked up a movie at the market and watched it back at our campsite.
July 20 - Wednesday
Hiked to Lonesome Lake. Bobbi's blood pressure dropped. It was a very rocky trail and steep. We took pay showers back at the park.
July 21 - Thursday
Went to the big tourist attraction, The Flume. It reminded us of Red Rock Canyon in Waterton.
The water cascaded over a large rock face. It would make a good slide, but it was not allowed.
The forests were full of light.
Nice hike to a covered bridge.
July 22 - Friday
Drove the Kankamangus (Crap Humungus) Highway. Stopped at overlooks and campgrounds. Arrived at Sebago Lake and dumped. The park is packed with vehicles, but they are not all occupied. Walked to the lake. We saw a mouse in the van. We had seen chewed tissue in NH. He had a free trip to Maine.
