Tanzania 2015 - Airline Preparations

We booked a trip to Tanzania. The itinerary had flights from three airlines. Two days before we left, we realized we did not have assigned seats for two of the airlines.

Several hours later, after calling all the airlines, we had our seat assignments.

During the process, I realized that the tickets were reserved under my short-name, Tim, instead of my official name, Timothy. I called United Airlines to see what could be done. The representative informed my that since multiple airlines were involved, nothing could be done, except cancelling the tickets and re-booking them. I was not surprised to learn that the cheap, award-travel tickets were no longer available. The representative sent an OSI message (whatever that is) to each of the other airlines, informing them of the error. I was told to speak with a ticket agent when I arrived at the airport.

When I arrived at the first airport, I was told that the ticket agent could do nothing, but that it was a minor discrepancy and would not have a problem. Right!

We had eight flights on the itinerary. I did not have a problem until the last leg from Toronto. I had to speak with a ticket agent. After a stern lecture, I was able to obtain a boarding pass. Lesson learned: double check that the name on the ticket matches the name on your identification.
