Morning Game Drive - Saturday, 8 August 2015
David was our guide on this early morning game drive. We were rewarded with a beautiful morning and a pride of 14 lions. The lions contained cubs, teenagers, young adults and females.
One of the cubs was a trouble maker. He laid in wait and ambushed his siblings. He tried it with an adult, but she would have none of it.
We left the tree-lined reiver and out into the plain. We saw a hyena and a jackal. We were playing leap-frog with the other vehicles. At this point we were last. The other vehicles did not see the jackal. We came upon the other vehicles with Ombeni and Nasoro. Ombeni had spotted a rhino in the distance, by the river. Neither Nasoro's nor David's groups saw the rhino.
Next we saw the Cary Grant (crowned lapwing) bird. I named it this because it looked like it was wearing sun glasses. Further down the road, we found a herd of about 100 Thompson gazelle, bunched near some rocks. Once they saw us, they paraded in single-file across the road in front of us. At this point, we were the first vehicle. None of the other vehicles saw the parade of gazelles.
We came across two elephants that were checking each other out. They were trying to determine if they were brothers. If not, they would have fought. They were brothers. We were driving through an area dotted with kopjes.
Bobbi organized a short yoga class.
We had a nice, panoramic view.
On the way back to camp for lunch, we got some close-ups of a giraffe, secretary bird, fish eagle and sleeping lions.
After lunch we had a tour of the camp kitchen. They bake all the bread. There are lots of eggs, plenty of water and bins of fresh vegetables.
Afternoon Game Drive
We shot some close-ups of hartebeest and great gazelle.Near the flamingo lake, we saw a giraffe picking grass off the ground. It must have been tasty grass to go to all the trouble.
We were on the search for rhinos. Along the way, we saw our first eland, from a distance.
Late in the day, Ombeni saw a rhino in the distance, along a river. He has amazing eyesight.
Back at camp, the table was set for our last meal. We gathered before the fire before dinner.
